Acts 4: The Altar of the Church - Power and Boldness

Acts 4:29–31 (NIV)

“Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”

After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.

Scripture Reflection

In the face of threats and opposition, the early church did not shrink back or hide. They gathered together, lifted their voices in unified prayer, and asked for one thing: boldness. They did not ask for an easier life, or for protection from trouble, but for courage to proclaim Christ with power.

The rumblings are coming to us from New York City, where Pastor Sam is praying every day that he could lead someone to Christ, and in coffee shops around the city the name Jesus is being spoken. The rumblings are coming to us from London, where a tenth of a global city has heard about or participated in Alpha. It’s time for us to be bold, and to ask God for the ability to speak about Jesus with boldness. This is what the early church did in Acts 4. 

God responded to their bold prayers by shaking the very place where they met. He filled them again with the Holy Spirit and released them to speak His word without fear. This is the pattern of revival: when opposition arises, the church does not retreat but instead cries out for fresh power and fresh courage.

Today, many believers feel a rising cultural pressure, a sense of intimidation that tempts us to silence. But God is still able to fill His people with supernatural boldness and holy confidence. He still longs to stretch out His hand with signs and wonders, confirming the truth of His gospel.

As we rebuild the altar of prayer in the church, let us pray for more than comfort or safety. Let us ask God for the power of the Spirit to embolden us, for a shaking in our churches that sends us out fearless and faithful, carrying the name of Jesus with clarity and conviction.

Praying it UP / IN / OUT

UP: Praise God as the One who shakes places and fills His people with fresh power and boldness. Thank Him for His faithfulness to empower the witness of the church.

IN: Ask the Spirit to fill you with holy boldness, removing fear or hesitation to speak His word. Pray for a deeper dependence on His power, not your own strength.

OUT: Intercede for churches and leaders across New England to be shaken with fresh outpourings of the Spirit, so that the gospel is proclaimed with boldness and accompanied by signs and wonders.

Closing Prayer

God who shakes the earth,

We worship You as the One who fills Your people with boldness and power. We thank You for the courage You gave the early church, and we ask for that same courage in our day.

Stretch out Your hand again, Lord. Perform signs and wonders through the name of Jesus. Shake our churches until complacency is broken and fear is driven out.
Fill us afresh with Your Holy Spirit. Make us a fearless people, ready to proclaim Christ no matter the cost, eager to see Your kingdom advance.

We pray for a wave of holy boldness across New England — that pastors, leaders, and every believer would speak Your word clearly and courageously, trusting in Your power to save.

Until the world is filled with the knowledge of Your glory, keep us praying and speaking your word with great boldness.
