Luke 24: Hearts Burning on the Road

Scripture
Luke 24:13–32 (NIV)

Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him.

He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?”
They stood still, their faces downcast. One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”

“What things?” he asked.
“About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people.

The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place….”

As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them..

When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.

They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”

Scripture Reflection
On the Emmaus Road Jesus pursues his discouraged, disappointed disciples. Even when they did not recognize Him, He walks with them, listens to their disillusionment, and patiently opens the Scriptures to help them see the story from God’s perspective. In the breaking of bread, their eyes were finally opened, and their hearts burned with hope once again.

This is resurrection power at work: Jesus meets us on our road, in our confusion, and revives our hearts by His word and presence. So often revival begins this way — when our eyes are opened afresh to see Jesus, when the old stories become alive again, and our hearts begin to burn with fresh faith and passion.

For those longing for awakening in New England, this story is a prayer: that Jesus would draw near to the disillusioned and the weary, that He would break bread with them and reveal Himself, and that hearts would burn again with love and courage to share the good news.

Praying it UP / IN / OUT

UP: Worship Jesus as the risen Savior who walks alongside His people even when they cannot see Him. Praise Him for His faithfulness, His patience, and His power to open eyes and restore hope.

IN: Ask the Lord to open the eyes of your own heart wherever you feel disappointed, confused, or slow to believe. Pray for your heart to burn again with fresh wonder and faith as you hear His word and share communion with Him.

OUT: Intercede for those in your church and in New England who feel disillusioned or spiritually numb. Pray that Jesus would draw near to them on their road, reveal Himself, and ignite revival fire in their hearts.

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus, stay with us for evening is at hand and the day is past.

Be our companion in the way, kindle our hearts and awaken hope, that we may know you as you are revealed in the Scriptures and the breaking of the bread.

Grant this for the sake of your love.

Amen.
