John 11: Take off the Grave Clothes

Scripture
John 11:38–44

Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. “Take away the stone,” he said.

“But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.”

Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?”

So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.”

When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”
The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face.

Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”

Scripture Reflection

In this Easter season, we remember that resurrection is more than a doctrine — it is a Person. Jesus stands before the tomb of Lazarus, deeply moved, and calls the dead man by name. At His word, Lazarus is raised, stumbling out of the grave still wrapped in grave clothes.

But notice that Jesus then turns to the gathered community and says, “Loose him and let him go.” Lazarus was made alive by the voice of Jesus, but he still needed others to help unwrap him and free him to live.

This is the heart of Christian community: resurrection happens by Christ’s power, but restoration happens in the community of believers. We are called to help one another shake off the grave clothes of shame, addiction, fear, or sin. In revival, many will hear the voice of Jesus and come alive — but they will need a people willing to help them walk in freedom.

Eastertide invites us to see the power of resurrection not only in our own lives, but in the lives of others. Let us be those who help unbind, who speak freedom, who walk patiently with those Jesus is raising up.

Praying it UP / IN / OUT

UP: Worship Jesus as the Resurrection and the Life, who calls the dead by name and brings them out of the tomb.

IN: Pray for courage to let Jesus remove your own grave clothes — anything binding you from fully living. Ask Him to show you where you still need freedom.

OUT: Intercede for those Jesus is awakening in this season, that the Church would be ready to help them walk free from old patterns and live as new creations. For healing and deliverance and prayer ministers in the church who can take the grave clothes off of others.

Closing Prayer

Resurrecting God,

We praise You for Your power to call the dead to life. You speak and graves open, and the dead stand up again.

Help us, Lord, to be a community that partners with You in freedom. Teach us to unwrap grave clothes gently, to speak freedom boldly, to help one another live fully alive.

Where we still carry remnants of the tomb, set us free. Where others stagger out of darkness, make us patient helpers, willing to walk with them as they learn to walk in newness of life.

Amen.
