Isaiah 60: Arise, Shine
Scripture
Isaiah 60:1–3
“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you. See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord rises upon you and his glory appears over you. Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn.”
Scripture Reflection
In every generation, darkness covers the earth, and thick darkness the peoples. That darkness takes many forms — injustice, violence, despair, division — yet God is never intimidated by the dark. Instead, He promises to rise upon His people with radiant glory. Isaiah calls the people of God to arise and shine because the Lord Himself is their light.
Throughout church history, when God has visited His people in seasons of renewal, He has beautified His Church with His own glory. When believers are freshly revived and filled with holy love, they radiate a hope and a holiness that draws others in. During past awakenings in New England, it was not the cleverness of human strategy but the sheer brilliance of God’s presence that attracted seekers and even leaders — a spiritual brightness so compelling that “nations came to the light.”
This is the invitation of Epiphany: to arise and shine because our light has come. The world is watching, hungry for something real, something beautiful, something true. As the glory of the Lord rises upon us, the Church becomes a beacon once again — an illuminated city on a hill — welcoming those groping in the dark toward the brightness of Jesus’ dawn.
May we pray for a fresh season of beautifying, clarifying, and glorifying renewal, so that the nations might be drawn not to our performance, but to the living Christ shining through His radiant Bride.
Praying it UP / IN / OUT
UP: Worship God as the Light of the world, whose glory overcomes all darkness. Praise Him for His faithfulness to rise upon His people in every generation.
IN: Pray for the Spirit to renew, purify, and beautify the Church, clothing us with His presence so we might shine with holy love. Ask for any hidden shadows in your own life to be illuminated and transformed by His glory.
OUT: Intercede for the nations, your city, and your neighbors, that they would be drawn to the light of Christ reflected in His renewed Church. Pray that those walking in darkness would see and respond to the brightness of His dawn.
Closing Prayer
Light of the world,
We see how deep the darkness runs — in our culture, in our cities, in our hearts. Yet we thank You that You are not afraid of the dark. Your glory rises upon us even now, calling us to stand, to shine, to awaken.
Beautify Your Bride again. Make us radiant with the love, the purity, and the unity of Jesus. Where we have grown dim, reignite us. Where we have become dull, polish us until we reflect Your glory. Let the nations see not our brilliance, but Yours, shining through us.
We pray that kings and peoples, neighbors and nations, would stream to the brightness of Your dawn.
Make our churches places of light, places of hope, places of holy fire.
Amen.
