Rev 2: First Love Culture

Scripture

Revelation 2:1–5

“To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: These are the words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand and walks among the seven golden lampstands. I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false. You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name and have not grown weary. Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first. Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.”

Scripture Reflection
Jesus has strong words for the church in Ephesus. They were hardworking, persevering, doctrinally sound — yet they had lost the fire of their first love. In all their activity and even their faithfulness, their hearts had cooled. The One who walks among the lampstands warned them that without love, even their lamp could be removed.

Revival is always a return to first love. It is a rediscovery of the wonder, passion, and simplicity of loving Jesus above all else. In times of awakening, God reorders priorities, burns away religious performance, and calls His people back to Himself — to intimacy, to devotion, to affection.

It is possible to have the machinery of ministry running well while the fire of love goes out. Jesus is jealous for our hearts, not just our service. Lent gives us a moment to pause and ask: Have I left my first love? It invites us to return — to repent — to do again the things we did at first, when love was fresh and obedience was joyful.

May the Holy Spirit restore a first love culture in our hearts, in our churches, and in our region, so that our lampstands shine brightly with a flame fueled by deep love for Jesus.

Praying it UP / IN / OUT’

UP: Worship Jesus as the One who walks among the lampstands, worthy of all our love and devotion. Thank Him for His jealous, pursuing love for His Bride.

IN: Ask the Spirit to search your heart for places where first love has grown cold. Pray for a fresh affection and desire to love Jesus wholeheartedly.

OUT: Intercede for the churches in New England, that we would not settle for duty without delight, but would recover a culture of first love that shines brightly for Christ.

Closing Prayer

Loving Lord,

We praise You as the One who desires not just our works but our hearts. You are worthy of first place, worthy of all our love.

Forgive us, Lord, for drifting into coldness, for letting our devotion become routine. Call us back to the fire of first love. Teach us to remember, to repent, to return.

Restore in us a holy affection for You. Let our hearts burn with joy and wonder, the same joy we had when we first met You. Let that love spill out into our words, our worship, our witness.

Renew a first love culture in Your Church, so that the lampstands of New England shine brightly and do not go dark.

Until You return for Your Bride, keep our hearts soft, our devotion pure, and our lamps lit.

Amen.
