Matt 21: Cleansing the Temple
Scripture
Matthew 21:12–13
Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’ but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’”
John 2:13–17
When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house into a market!”
His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.”
Scripture Reflection
In this season of Lent, we remember that Jesus does not simply forgive sins — He also purifies the places of worship. Twice He cleansed the temple, confronting the spiritual clutter and corruption that had invaded what was meant to be a house of prayer. His zeal burned against everything that distracted, cheapened, or polluted His Father’s house.
Revival always involves a cleansing. When God comes close, He exposes what has crept into the temple of our hearts — the compromises, the idols, the distractions that keep us from communion with Him. Lent is a time to welcome Jesus’ cleansing work, to invite Him to overturn our tables, to drive out what does not belong, to restore prayer to the very center of our lives.
The Church, too, is His house. If we long for a move of God, we must prepare for Him to clear out everything that crowds out His glory. This is the holy love of Jesus: not content to leave us comfortable, but determined to make us holy.
May we open the doors wide to His cleansing zeal, trusting that every whip of cord is for our freedom and every overturned table is for our restoration.
Praying it UP / IN / OUT
UP: Worship Jesus for His holy zeal, His passion for true worship, and His desire to make His house a place of prayer.
IN: Ask the Spirit to search your own heart and reveal what needs to be cleansed. Pray for courage to let Jesus overturn whatever has become a distraction or a compromise.
OUT: Intercede for the Church in New England, that God would purify His house once again, restoring prayer and holiness at the very center of His people.
Closing Prayer
Zealous Savior,
You will not share Your temple with idols. You will not tolerate distraction where You desire devotion. We praise You for Your fierce love that burns away our compromises.
Come into our lives and overturn every table that does not honor You. Drive out the noise, the clutter, the performance. Restore our hearts to be houses of prayer, places of holy encounter with You.
Cleanse Your Church, Lord. Make us ready for Your glory. Let New England become a place where Your presence dwells undiluted, where Your people are wholly Yours, where prayer rises day and night.
Make our hearts, our homes, our churches, even our region a house of prayer for all nations.
Amen
