John 7: The Altar of the Heart
Scripture
John 7:37–39
On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
Scripture Reflection
At the height of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out to the crowds: “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.” In a world overflowing with distractions and shallow satisfactions, Jesus still looks for those who are truly thirsty — hungry hearts desperate for what only He can give.
This is the cry of revival: a longing for more of God, a refusal to be satisfied with spiritual apathy or half-hearted religion. Jesus promises that those who come to Him with genuine hunger will not be disappointed. He will pour out His Spirit like living water, refreshing, reviving, and overflowing into the world around them.
Throughout history, every great movement of God has been preceded by this kind of holy hunger — men and women unwilling to settle, crying out for more, pressing in for a fresh outpouring. Revival never comes to the complacent. It comes to the thirsty.
May God stir in us such a hunger, such a desperation, that we would run to Him again and again, until rivers of living water flow through us to a dry and weary land.
Praying it UP / IN / OUT
UP: Worship Jesus as the Fountain of living water, who alone can satisfy the deepest thirst of our souls.
IN: Pray for a deeper hunger for God, asking Him to increase your thirst for His presence and His Spirit.
OUT: Intercede for believers and churches across New England to become hungry and thirsty once again, crying out for fresh streams of revival to flow through them.
Closing Prayer
Jesus, Fountain of Life,
We praise You as the One who calls the thirsty, who satisfies, who pours out rivers of living water.
Forgive us for our complacency, for settling for lesser things. Stir up a holy hunger in us, a thirst that drives us to You alone.
Pour out Your Spirit, Lord. Let living water flow through us, refreshing our hearts and bringing life to others. Make us conduits of Your revival presence in a dry and weary land.
Until rivers of living water flow in our families, our churches, our cities, keep us thirsty, seeking, and daily coming back to You.
Amen.
