Isaiah 56: The Altar of the Church

Scripture

Isaiah 56:7

“These I will bring to my holy mountain and give them joy in my house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be accepted on my altar;
for my house will be called a house of prayer for all nations.”

Scripture Reflection
God’s vision for His house has always been clear: a house of prayer for all nations. When Jesus cleansed the temple (as recorded in the Gospels), He quoted this very verse, reminding God’s people what they had lost. The temple was meant to be a place where heaven and earth met in prayer, where all peoples could seek God, where worship and intercession rose day and night.

It is striking that God does not say His house will be a house of discipleship, or worship, or missions, or justice, or teaching — though all of these are essential. The first identity of the house of God is prayer. Prayer is the essence, the core, the vitalizing principle behind all these other things. It is the lifeblood of a church’s mission, worship, justice, discipleship, and teaching.

When the altar of prayer is rebuilt in the church, the rest of the ministry flows with power and clarity. Without it, we become busy but barren, active but fruitless. Jesus’ jealousy for a house of prayer shows us that every move of God starts here — with people who learn to prioritize His presence and call on His name.

May God restore our churches as houses of prayer, places where His presence is welcomed, where His glory dwells, and where the nations are drawn to Him.

Praying it UP / IN / OUT

UP: Worship God for His desire to dwell among His people and hear their prayers, making His house a place of holy encounter.

IN: Pray that your own church would be renewed as a house of prayer, with a culture that prioritizes seeking God’s face above all else.

OUT: Intercede for churches across New England to rebuild the altar of prayer, becoming places of powerful intercession that invite God’s transforming presence for all nations.

Closing Prayer

Lord of the temple,

We praise You for Your heart that calls Your house a house of prayer for all nations. You desire a people who seek You, who cry out to You, who host Your presence with reverence and love.

Forgive us for letting lesser things crowd out the altar of prayer. Cleanse our churches, Lord, and restore us to our first calling.

Teach us to build every ministry — worship, discipleship, justice, teaching, mission — on the foundation of prayer. Let prayer be the fuel, the atmosphere, the heartbeat of Your house once more.

Until Your house is known again as a house of prayer, keep us interceding, depending, and us hungry for Your presence.

Amen.
